Featured Presentation

Getting Solid Results Using The Fuzzy Data Controls in SSIS

Speaker: Gene Hill, DBA

Summary: You'll feel warm and fuzzy after learning how controls in SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) can play a major role in improving the quality of your data. Using a list of medical providers as our example, we will walk through the full cycle of a process that performs historical list cleanup and detects new list members via fuzzy matching. This entails identifying string patterns in data fields, parsing them accordingly, then feeding the results through an SSIS process that employs the Fuzzy Lookup and Fuzzy Grouping controls. Subject to additional user-designed filters, a resulting similarity score is then compared to a threshold to either match new members to an existing member or create a new list entry. We will conclude the session touching on the new Data Cleansing Services (DQS) transformation bundled in SQL Server 2012.

About Gene: Gene Hill serves as data manager at LCF Research, an Albuquerque-based health services research organization whose activities include management of the New Mexico Health Information Exchange. Prior to LCF, Gene worked as a systems analyst and database consultant in financial services, merchandising and municipal government in New York City, New Mexico and Madrid.
