Featured Presentation

Locks, Blocks & Bears Oh My!

Speaker: Keith Tate, DBA

Summary: Have you ever seen or used “WITH (NOLOCK)” in T-SQL? Do you know what it does and its side effects? Is SQL Server optimistic or pessimistic when it comes to locking? Can it be both? In this session we will cover these questions and discuss how and why SQL Server takes locks and how that affects other users. We will go over alternatives for using NOLOCK and discuss when it is appropriate to use. In addition, we will discuss what ACID is and how to monitor locks, blocks and bears (maybe not bears).

About Keith: Keith Tate is a Senior Database Administrator with over 14 years of experience as a data professional. During Keith's professional career he has been a developer, DBA and data architect. Keith is also active in the SQL Server community and is currently the chapter leader of the Albuquerque SQL Server User Group.
